The Bridlewood Stables in Morris Alabama mentioned in the Voice article still stands...the Chambers left the industry long ago ~70's or maybe early 80's, but still live in Morris and have a little ladies boutique. Billy Morgan and Joe Spivey both trained horses there at one time, they both were from KY I believe.

Jerry Bagwell mentioned was my late uncle. One of those horses, Peppermint Patty, was Tim's juvenile horse that he trained himself was 6th one year at the Celebration. I can remember Patty getting pulled in near the end of the 2nd work-out and having to go right back on the rail for the final work-out. She laid in the stall for a couple of days without getting up. It scared us to death, but she was just exhausted. Endurance was a huge factor back then when the classes were not split.

Winston's Playboy was Uncle Jerry's amateur mount and one night he spooked while being unloaded off the trailer at their home. He bolted and ran across the opening to their storm shelter and fractured his leg. After he was euthanized, my uncle never kept another horse for very long, he said he would never get attached to another horse. Started keeping horses with a trainer and traded horses often. Playboy was a dapple gray and there weren't many of them at the time and I fell in love with the color. I still favor white (Snowman), gray (Playboy) and blue roan (Duke's Handy Boy) for those horses from my childhood.

Mirally,

Was Peppermint Patty a mare with white stockings? What color was she?

You can add Graymare to our growing list of roving Photojournalists. She visited the site of the old Sam Paschal farm and got these shots of Sam's old barn.

Graymare said...

"This is all that is left of Mr. Sam's "farm" barn on the Franklin Road. Mr. Pat's Suits Me Farm just down the road is a subdivision now. The Paschal training barn in town is now a park with soccer fields and some recreation areas."

Smitty, Peppermint Patty was a strawberry roan. Big, hard walking mare and I honestly don't remember what became of her. Tim quit showing ~70-72, I guess. No one else in family ever showed Patty....as I mentioned Uncle Jerry traded, sold horses frequently after Playboy was put down. And, back then horses were often shown under aliases...that may not have been her registered name. I don't even have a picture of Patty that I can recall.

MM,

I recall a mare named Peppermint Patty at Bob McQuerry's back in the 70's. Can't recall much about her color or size, although I think she had stockings. Probably not the same mare.

I looked in IPEDS, there were 3 Peppermint Patty mares, but none fit her age. But, she may have ended up in KY after they owned her. I think she may have had white legs, but cannot recall the details.

I remember a Peppermint Patty in KY as well. Wonder if Frankie Jo and/or Billie remember her?

Dunno, Dubya. I think she was a smallish mare. Chestnut maybe, with two white socks behind, maybe (?)
