TWH The First WGC that was padded was Go Boy's Shadow and I should know when we started putting pads on, but can't recall, but Sadlbum or Deltaboy will know for sure

| Go Boys Shadow won the TWH WGC in 1955 & 1956. In 1956 he won wearing pads & boots. Thats not to say that other horses didn't wear pads before then.

I have a magazine some where, with a picture of Talk of the Town (WGC 51, 52 & 53) wearing pads, later on in his career.

If all depends on what you are calling "pads" Walking horses had two or three leather pads with bigger shoes with toes clips (much like saddle horse are shod) in the late 40's for sure, long before action devices. Horses were single nailed up through the early 60's and double-nailing of pads started around 66-68. Bottom pads were nailed to foot pad with # 16 nails through about 77. When pad height got to much for 16's ( 4" or more) they started nailing bottoms to foot pads with house nails.

BigEd, Well You have told me some info, that I wasn't aware of. I've seen & own hundreds of pictures of TWH's from the late forties & never noticed anything that resembled buildups. Some of the horses seemed to have had long toes. I wonder who had the foot pad idea, where you nailed on the enormous package with house nails?

Sadlbum, This is not to say that all horses had leather pads. My grandad won the aged gelding class at Celebration in 50 on Tenn. Rebel. He had those leather pads. The biggest reason they used the leather is because the long natural hoof was hulled out and lead was put up in the hoof and the leather pads were to hold it in. Rebel had about 4# of lead in each foot This wasn't the first horse to have this done. Don't know about the house nails. Probably someone like Dan Arnold. You know what they say: "Necessity is the mother of invention"

Brenda and Ernest, as well as Lee and Rebecca, are in my prayers. Ernest is great with a young horse, but even more, he is an extremely nice person. Also saw that Joan Hildredth's son-in-law had drowned. That would be the husband of Brock Tillman's sister. Don't know details. This has been some kind of a day!!!

Graymare...It certainly has been a bad news day, for the TWH family and celebrities. The press had indicated Farrah was in her final days...but then Michael Jackson. Wonder what his autopsy will reveal? I hope the Nashville Police officer survives his serious injuries...and glad they caught the MS convict that shot him.

Did ya'll see the story about the "Cheetoh fight" in S'ville? It made the national news. Must have been the hard crunch cheetos and not the air puffed ones. I never knew that they were that dangerous.

Yes, I watched the stream. That is addictive. It wasn't over until about 12:45. Glad I didn't have to drive home. Actually, I fell asleep in my chair a couple of times while trying to watch. Does that say "old"?????? Kentucky was not so lucky. They had two carloads of visitors accompanied by highway patrol. Only two horses were led up for inspection. The first was turned down and rumor says that was probably not a terrible call. However, the second was inspected, walked the cones, inspected by DQPs, VMOs repeatedly.... last I heard had walked the cones for the fourth time and was eventually turned down. It is a horse known to be clean. Folks, if it takes that long to make a decision, then the horse wasn't "sore"!!!! People standing around quietly watching were asked to move. Nobody was unruly, so what is there to hide? Not one horse showed. Not even the saddlebreds. The 4-H team did do a demonstration, but those horses were not checked for whatever reason. So much for Thursday night in Owingsville. Wonder where they will strike next??? Our government tax dollars at work!!! Ridiculous!!!!!!!
