Good job MIB,

It was indeed Colonel Jack Haynes who sailed his hat across the ring and into the crowd in 1940. He was, of course, riding Hayne's Peacock who defeated Strolling Jim to win the second WGC ever.

The hat he was wearing was a STETSON.
