| S Jim was owned by Mannings of Ca after he won the 1939 show, Mrs Dewain Clark of Beverly Hills had previouslly owned GB's Royal Heir (traded Hills Perf for him), but I guess Arthur Gordons Gens Armed & Dangerous might have actually been the first horse owned by a Californian at the time he won. Mark of Carbon might have been partly owned by a Californian also.

Do any of you know much about Mrs Clark of Beverly Hills mentioned above? My old broodmare (Ebony's Big Souvenir) was originally owned by Mrs Clark, if I am recalling correctly. Bred by Steve Hill. I am at work and do not have her papers. This mare died 2 years ago at age 30, but I have one of her daughters. Also wondered if any of you remembered much about Merry Souvenir, this was her granddam. Lined With Blue, 2008 Reserve Futurity 3year old mare, is the grand-daughter of Ebony's Big Souvenir.

Steve Hill used to show Merry Souviner. She won the Junior Stake, the aged mare class a couple of times and tied well in the big stake a few times.

Merry Souvenir was a big blue-roan mare with black "trimmings". She was a very good one and could hold her own with the best of them.

I would have loved seeing Merry Souvenir! I actually bought this granddaughter of Merry Souvenir (Ebony's Big Souvenir-1977 model) sight unseen based on her production (dam of WC Pride's Flashy Girl) and her color (blue roan) in 1991. I have one of her daughters (Papa's Dream Walker, full sister to Flashy Girl) and 2 of her granddaughters (Lined With Blue (grey) and Southern Souvenir (blue roan) to carry on her legacy. I've always wondered if the older mare had ever been shown, but do not know of any database for the old show results. I looked at her papers when I got home and confirmed that she was owned/bred by Mrs Clark of Beverly Hills, and subsequently sold to Steve Hill. I didn't recall anything about Mrs Clark and found it interesting that she was connected to Hill's Perfection (one of my favorites back in the day) and Royal Heir.

Does anyone remember the BIG 17+ hands walking horse that a fellow used to bring to the Celebration? Seems like he had a white tail set on. I don't remember him ever riding him, but he may have. Does anyone know the horse or handler's name?

I believe you might be right about the name Jean. Sounds right. I wonder if that monstrous horse was ever shown? On another note, does anyone remember the "Webb Instant Walkin Shoe" ? Did anyone ever use it? What other innovations was Joe Webb noted for?

Giant Black Horse (Suns Unbelievable H. x Suns Rocket Go Boy) Owned by Elwood Howland of Manchester Tn. who came up in the Steve Hill barn. He would lead that old horse between the donut shed & warmup ring in the late afternoon on stake night. You would have thought he was a previous WGC. White tail set with white netting, white leg wraps & white fleeced halter, what a site (esp. to thousands of greenhorns). He was billed as the worlds largest TWH. Elwood also had a 12 or 13 hand mare that he claimed was the smallest. I went with him & his family to the Symrna show one night. He had converted a rentall type truck into a horse vann. It came up a rain & got the rubber coated ramp wet. While leading a horse down it, It slipped & fell on him. Had to have pins put in his forearm. He had a habit of asking to be excused at lineup time. He & Alice, his wife were nice folks. I graduated HS with his daughter Wilma.

Patty's horse was Dandy's Prince Bay. He was a nice horse I must admit. I still remember him beating me, your sister and the Sheltons at the State Fair that year. I think he was several notches above the rest of us, sad to say.

Mona, I remember Mr. Gibbs very well. He and my dad were friends. I remember lots of stories about him, but I remember watching him show one night. Center ring had one of the funeral tents covering it and the back was down. The stake class came in and Joe's horse wouldn't canter. So each time the judge called for the canter, he pulled up behind the curtain where the judge couldn't see him! He won the class. It was a wild night in Virginia after that! Susie O

Joe Gibbs was the first horse trainer I ever knew. I was in about the ninth grade and traded my spotted pony for a spotted horse (not TW) who needed some work. My daddy found out about Joe who at the time was in Rocky Mount, NC. We took the horse to him. He had several stalls in the corner of a tobacco warehouse and did his riding in the street. I would get out of school early and we would go to Rocky Mount to ride. I thought I was in heaven. Mona

Did you know Rosie Doyle who rode MacKay's Delta out of Joe's barn? And on a sadder note, Claudia Woody's mother (Reese Woody's wife) who were exhibitors eons ago, died last week. Mr. Woody showed road ponies and Claudia showed walking horses as a juvenile.
