Larry, I think they were even settin em a little earlier than that. In the beginning it was "optional" as to whether the tail was set or not.

Bloggsters, Rambling Allen (above) was owned by Kennie Nelson near Chapel Hill Tn, where Nathan Bedford Forrest was born. Sometime around summer of 88, I got a call from Leon Oliver & He said that there was an upcoming auction of Kennie Nelsons estate & that there was a complete collection of Blue Ribbons yearbooks. I had been trying to put My first set together for years & couldn't find a complete 39 issue. I had all the others. I had a 39 without a cover & the first seven pages, but couldn't seem to find a complete 39. My wife & I went to the sale. The family members 5 & 10 dollared the BR's up to $500. I stayed out of it. When the auctioneer started to say 3 times sold, I yelled out $600 & got them. We were prepared to pay $1200. I sold My partial set to Jim Gandy of Dallas for $950 at the next Sale of Showring Champions. Leon Oliver told Me afterwards, that some of the People didn't appreciate an OUTSIDER coming & buying those books. I thought that was what an auction was all about. I later sold the set to Billy Taylor of Winchester, He was a Co-worker of Leon Oliver. I have had several sets since then. I now have a set that I put together, found the 39 in Morrison. The pages from the sale catalog are from a 40's era Murray Farm. Notice that the prices are about the same as todays prices. Not many horses today bring $1000, as You see that one at this sale brought. WITH THE OLYMPICS on & the upcoming CELEBRATION, WE won't be on here very much until September.

I love the quote on the ad above "A GOOD TAIL IS HALF THE HORSE" - if that were only true! Ya'll remember those switches that fit over an uncut tail? Did you EVER see one that looked right? They would always be leaning to the side or up over the back - or dragging on the ground. There is a saddle horse barn not too far from here - & the owner came in one morning to find that tails had been whacked off during the night. Apparently there is a black market for switches now!
