kywalker. I think it would be great if you would send tha article in to WHR or Voice and try to get it published agian. I woould love to see it and the history and see how we have progressed. Great you have it still.

I would hate to see your storage room and how on earth did you ever find it again.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

(unknown)

Saddie, you are correct, B. Major Wilson was originally named Midnight Sincerity.
J441, yes it was Johnny Midnight that won the stallion class at the 1966 Celebration.
Another question, what WGC was also the winner of the Ladies Amateur class?
____________________________________________________________________________________________

Mason

I wasnt aware of that...MAYBE but I dont think so....We were searching for a name because of his full Bro Super Sport and we came up with The Super Stock. I dont THINK ? he was reg in another name...BUT I HAVE BEEN WRONG BEFORE

Mason
____________________________________________________________________________________________

(Unknown)

Mason, according to IPEDS, Super Stock's original name was Mr. Determination.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

Mason

To answer your question as to why I am into Saddlebreds now and NOT Walking Horses....This POST would go on for days if I really answered you....I LOVE lots of the Walking Horse people...I LOVE the HORSE,& the history.... BEEN THERE, DONE THAT, GOT THE SHIRT ! Still enjoy keeping up with my old friends ....but just TOO MANY PROBLEMS that I can NEVER see getting solved with the WH.I always liked Saddlebreds ,hung around Ellis Waggoners barn a lot back in the OLD DAYS. Was friends with Harry Spotts and some of the oldtime Saddlebred trainers.Just never got that out of my system so to speak...so when I retired I thought why not? I do not own any Saddlebreds, but MIGHT someday.Aint NOTHIN anymore exciting than to see a Good'en trotting down that runway into Freedom Hall on Saturday night! Makes my hair stand on end like the WH used to yrs ago.
David Mason
____________________________________________________________________________________________

Mason

THE SUPER STOCK....Not SUPER STOCK?? YOU MAY BE RIGHT..I cant disagree with facts....but I have tried many times!

Mason
____________________________________________________________________________________________

(unknown)

Mason,
According to TWHBEA's records, The Super Stock was by Scat Man Mc. and out of May Allen Girl and was foaled 6-9-68. I don't know for a fact that is correct, and you would know better than I would, but that's what the record shows. Its hard for me to believe a WGC that I remember that well was foaled 38 years ago.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

broomman

Hello old friend! Or should I say Sunups 7come11..
Sign my guestbook so I can have your email address and email you.

I have a hat worn by Claude Brown. Interesting story behind when I got it.

I really like this trivia post.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

lola

Moonglow-Was the WGC that also won the ladies class,Go Boy's Royal Heir?I believe that the rider was Candace Williams.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

(unknown)

Royal Heir won the Amateur Grand Championship in 67 with Candace Williams and the WGC in 68 with Donald Paschal. The horse I'm asking about won the Ladies Amateur Walking Horses any age or sex the same year he won the WGC.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

MINI ME

Was it Midnight Sun?
____________________________________________________________________________________________

dani

Moonglow66,
Was it Sherri Dietz on The Pusher?
____________________________________________________________________________________________

MINI ME

Moonglow66, would you happen to be the rider of MOONGLOW JR IN THE 1960'S? I LOVED THAD BLOND HEADED HORSE!
____________________________________________________________________________________________

(unknown)

MINI ME,
Yes it was Midnight Sun with Mrs. Henry Davis riding that won the Ladies Amateur class at the 1945 Celebration. He also won the Aged Stallion class, the Open Stallion class, as well as the Championship Stake.
An interesting note was that it was Mr. Henry Davis that was responsible for talking Mr. Wirt Harlin into buying Midnight Sun (then named Joe Lewis) from John Hendrixson for $4,400.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

dani

Does anyone know where I can get ahold of the insets for "The Gallery of Grand Champions" that the TWH National Celebration put out? Just want to get ahold of the 1992 and on.

Dani
____________________________________________________________________________________________

twhlady

Burt Daughette from Gadsden, AL owned and rode Moonglow Jr.......and her sister Claire Daughette rode Rock-a-Bye Lady.........both multi-titled champions and both trained by Vic Thompson.

What North Carolina TWH family did Claire marry in to?

Here is a really good question.......
Who remembers Ceila Shuptrine Allison from L.A. (that would be Lower Alabama)
Celia won the Ladies Class - do not know for certain the horse's name........perhaps it might have been Romeo's Merry Queen - don't know.

Other good questions....
What was the name of Kim Lovett's horse?
What was her home state?
Who ended his showring career on that same horse?
What division did this horse win?

Some of you folks must have bookcases full of old Blue Ribbons and programs..........and I totally envy your being able to read through them.....

Sarah Lynn
____________________________________________________________________________________________

saddie

you can buy the years that youn need from the celebration, the cost of a new complete Gallery would be less.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

kywalker

Sable, this thread moves so fast I cannot keep up.I inherited a collection of various "horse" magazines that dates back to the early 40's. I have not missed a Celebration since 1955, I started young.HA My father has horses with Jimmy McConnell and I train my own. My brother judged the Celebration. Harold Dean Givens has tried for years to get me to list all of my books and I just have not gotten it done. Both of my children have won ribbons at the Celebration and cantered when they were seven years old.

My wife says I live in the past, that must be why I am enjoying this.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

(unknown)

Twhlady, wasn't Burt's sister named Ann?
The horse I remember Kim Lovette best for was Hill's Perfection. She was from Wilkesboro, N.C. Ross Perot Jr. later showed him and was Juvunile WGC.
Mini Me you may be thinking about James K. Taylor that used to show Moonglow Jr. before the Daugettes bought him.I never showed him(wish I did) but I did show a gelding by Midnight Moonglow who was also Jr.'s sire.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

twhlady

Moonglow, you are correct..........

Ann Daughette Renfrow's daughter is named Claire....

Ann Daughette rode Rock-A-Bye Lady to the Ladies title several times. A great rider and a great mare.....

James K. Taylor owned Moonglow Jr. prior to the Daughette family purchasng him.

Maybe David Howard can give us information about the name of the last TWH that Mr. Taylor showed? I have forgotten - know the horse died and Mr. Taylor stopped showing the TWH though he owned a huge farm in Huntsville and also raised AQH.

Sarah Lynn
____________________________________________________________________________________________

(unknown)

I remember James K. had a young horse by Moonglow Jr. I believe, named Moon Man. He was going to be a great one but died as a 3 or 4 y.o.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

glory

Sarah Lynn, I believe you are as old as I am. I remember all these horses and people about which you
are posting.

Mona Dean
____________________________________________________________________________________________

twhlady

Dear - wonderful - MONA.

Fantastic to know who you are.........I've moved back to NC to oversee Mother's care.......am just down the road apiece from you......

AND YES - I CAN NOW SAY THAT I AM OLD.....but with the age comes countless true and valuable memories.

Originally when I thought about initiating this thread I really wondered if there would be any response - and hesitated........so glad I went ahead with the idea.

So many great people have responded. And so many people come to mind. Aren't our memories great? haven't we had some truly fantastic people involved with us and our wonderful horse? Maybe more will chime in........Even David Mason has joined us. (He is also one of the turtle racers - hope you watch all that on Bob Medina's 'Dumbest Move' thread here on David Howard's web site - )

I have a question for you. Who was that rather handsome doctor, a surgeon I think, that was such a fantastic sport and showed so long. He was of the vintage of Dude Riddle and Stanley Bowles - but he came from NC and not VA. I think he once owned Merry Bells that Mary Van Jenkins also rode.

And remember when all our shows here in NC included a division for the American Saddlebred Horses - and all those great competitors? (I come from a family that owned and raised the American Saddlebred.)

Whatever happened to Linda Champion who produced all the shows for the State of NC? Glenn Petty now handles those shows........and does an absolutely fantastic job too...........

Sarah Lynn (I am a '42 model.....almost an antique)
____________________________________________________________________________________________

lola

Did Kim Lovett also have Johnny's Rebel Maid?Celia Allison owned a horse that was showing in the last few years.Seems like Joel Weaver had the mare, but am not certain.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

lola

I remember Romeo's Merry Queen when she was shown by Suzie Beasley, and trained by Albert Lee Rowland. She later married John Day and in her adult years showed Jenny's Jezebel from David Landrum's barn.

twhlady

There are two women, both named Celia Allison - and who are related through marriage (I think). I am speaking of Celia Shuptrine - and who later married to become Allison. She competed and won at the Celebration....I attended a 'horsey set'party at her georgeous home in Selma many years ago. Saw fantastic old pictures.........wondered about the name of her horse.........Also did some field trials at White Bluffs, their plantation.........(they gave me a trotting horse ASB type to ride as a joke.....but I managed to ride the day ...somewhat uncomfortably though)

sl
___________________________________________________________________________________________

Saddle Tramp

Does anyone know what became of George Livingstone? He rode Gunsmoke's Minute Man and Winston's Black Gal. He trained with Vic Thompson and Toby Green.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

J441

I remember George well, but I lost touch with him too. He trained on his own as well under George Livingstone Stables.
He also sold a horse named Small Town Dude to Belinda Delashmitt who went on to take reserve in the Amateur Championship at the Racking Horse Celebration.
Back to the Carolinas, does anyone remamber Pat Pruitt? He had several sales listing ownership as "The Four Sons of Pat Pruitt".
One more note about Chattanooga area horse people: one of my good friends growing up was Kieth Holly, son of Floyd Holly who trained walking horses and had a brother who trained with John Young amoung others. Keith still attends the Celebration every year. Our families camped near each other in a field next to the Sale of Champions grounds, along with Jimmy Cunningham, Johnny Cabe, and sometimes John & Ronal Young.
I also miss the late Joe Vann Clayton, Jr. You'll remember him as one of the riders who won a Celebration blue on Setting Sun's Apollo.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

J441

When posting the message above I was reminded of a conversation with another one of my friends about how expensive showing horses has gotten.
He told me he remembered the days of pulling onto the grounds with your horse in the back of a converted bread truck or in a trailer attached to any vehicle capable of making the trek over Monteagle Mountain...of camping in a tent in the field with no electricity for $30 for the week. The restrooms and showers were about 1/4th mile away on the showgrounds; horse stalls were closer depending on the need. We would work the sales, and then dine on cube steaks cooked on a Coleman stove and a side of cottage cheese before we walked to the showgrounds in your best jeans for the evening's performance. You showed the horse you loved and kept in your back yard. The one you used to trail ride in the winter (with the same saddle) and were tickled to death to have the opportunity to participate. Making the workout meant bragging rights for the year, and even the lowliest ribbon elevated you to star status in your hometown circuit. And you thought you were the luckiest person on earth just to be able to witness it all.
Now we follow our six- or seven- figure investment (horse) that we see a couple dozen times a year in the trainers semi rig to the grounds driving our Lexus, Jag, Mercedes or what have you. The point is to look good. We find the nearest Hilton and complain that the TV remote needs batteries. We go to the showgrounds after dining on linguini and clams, jump into our custom golf carts, and are dropped off at the entrance wearing our best sport coats and ties. And we think we are the luckiest people on earth if our entries all pass inspection.
Hmmm.....
___________________________________________________________________________________________

makethecut

There was an aged stallion that showed in the late 60's and early 70's(at the Celebration) that was a black roan and a very nice horse. I need some help remembering his name.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

(Unknown)

makethecut,
Did this horse show in open or amateur classes? Do you remember anything else about him? Owner, trainer, what part of the country he was from?
___________________________________________________________________________________________

makethecut

I remember him showing in the aged stallion and stake classes at the Celebration. Maybe shown by Albert Lee Rowland?
___________________________________________________________________________________________

J441

Mizzou's Threat? Not sure of his color, but he was very nice. He was about to steal the Grand Championship one night but he broke in the running walk.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

twhlady

Tony, you or moonglow or J441 look in an old Blue Ribbon or Voice. Albert Lee rode a black roan - big doing horse, Was it Quarterback Sneak? Somehow that name comes to mind.........

Sarah Lynn
___________________________________________________________________________________________

jwalker

I was there in 1975 when Mr. Rowland was riding Mizzou's Threat and broke in the running walk right in from of the judge. He was trying and was going to pass Ebony's True Grit and joe Fleming.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

(Unknown)

Albert Lee Rowland did show a blue roan named Quarterback Sneak, and I remember there was an incident between him and Joe Martin at the Columbia Spring Jubilee one year in the Jr. class. I do seem to recall a black lit up horse with four white legs named I think Mr. Masterful that used to show in the 60s. Can't remember where he was from or who showed him, but I want to say Ohio.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

glory

SaraLynn, was the doctor from NC Dr. Henry Cutchings?
I think he is still living in the Charlotte area. He
owned Jenny's Jezebel who was mentioned in another post. He owned the mare as a young horse, trained by
David Polk.

Linda Champion is in Raleigh but I don't think she is
involved with horses anymore.

I love this thread.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

tomlaw

I had heard that someone stuck his hand out and made Albert Lee break. What do you think?
___________________________________________________________________________________________

Saddle Tramp

J441,
Do you remember Appletide's Delight and Perry Walden? Was he a plantation horse or a racking horse? Also, how's you dad? A friend from Manchester wants to know.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

makethecut

Thanks for the help. It was Quarterback Sneak that Albert Lee rode.

Appletide's Delight showed in the Racking Horse class the couple of years that the Celebration included them.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

twhlady

Mona -

I called around town and reached one of the old Fayetteville horsemen (one of the Williams clan)....
I found out the doctor whose name I could not remember was Dr. Hubert Poteat..I also remember Dr. Cutchings. Dr. Poteat had horses back in the 60's.......when Charlie Bobo was at Thomasville, NC.

Tony, you mentioned Racking Horses at the Celebration. Do you remember the classes for Saddle Horses, Roadster to Bike, and Ladies on Road Horses Under Saddle at the Celebration?

What outstanding female in our industry and also a noted judge, competed on both Amreican Saddlebreds and Tennessee Walking Horses?

Sarah Lynn
___________________________________________________________________________________________

J441

Appletide's Delight was indeed a racking horse & was shown by Perry Walden, Mike's brother.
Dad is doing very well to be 84 and to have lived through all the cardiac problems he has had. Not sure if you know that Katie passed away a few years back from cancer. That's been his toughest blow.
He still has a couple of horses and drives himself just about where ever he wants to go. Too tough & ornery to give up, thank God!
Thanks for asking!
___________________________________________________________________________________________

(Unknown)

twhlady,
Is the answer to your question Laura Brandon?
___________________________________________________________________________________________

twhlady

Of course, the answer is Laura Lou........She is equally as comfortable and impressive on a Saddle Horse as she is on a Walking Horse.......

Sarah Lynn
___________________________________________________________________________________________

howarddavidl

as is Lindsay Landrum!
___________________________________________________________________________________________

(Unknown)

When White Star was named WGC she had previously placed second in her preliminary class for aged mares. What was the name of the mare that beat her in the aged mare class?
___________________________________________________________________________________________

(Unknown)

Lindsay and my granddaughter Laney as well. Laney learned FIRST on the Saddle horse ahead of the TWH.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

dani

Moonglow66,
My guess is Midnight Merry Bird. A good looking big sorrel mare.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

(Unknown)

Midnight Merry Bird it was. She also won the ladies class that year. The year before she was 3 y.o. mare champion and reserve Jr. WGC. The year before that she won the 2y.o. filly class and was 2 y.o. WGC.Certainly she was one of the greatest mares of her era.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

(Unknown)

What WGC was also a WC weanling, yearling, 2y.o. and 3 y.o.?

SarahLynn, I remember Dr. Poteat now that you have
reminded me. He lived about 15 miles from me.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

dani

Moonglow66,
I had to dig for that one, but was it Merry Go Boy?
___________________________________________________________________________________________

(unknown)

Dani,
You got it again. The only time Merry Go Boy was ever defeated was in the weanling championship and when he placed second in the WGC as a three y.o. behind Midnight Sun.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

(unknown)

What was the FIRST WGC to be foaled on the farm of Dr. Porter Rogers in Searcy, Arkansas?
___________________________________________________________________________________________

jwalker

Rodger's Perfection?
___________________________________________________________________________________________

dani

Moonglow66,
I think it was Old Glory's Big Man, I really had to search for that one. Love the questions and searching for them..
___________________________________________________________________________________________

(unknown)

Dani, I'll bet you would be good on Jeopardy.Yes, Old Glory's Big Man was the first. He had a brood mare named Merry Walker that later produced Roger's Perfection and Go Boy's Shadow. In addition she produced Shadow's Sis who was the dam of Mark Of Carbon. What mare was five times winner of the aged mare class at the Celebration?
___________________________________________________________________________________________

dani

Moonglow66,
I would love to go on TWH Jeopardy, but I need a couple of things....My TWH books, the internet, and about an hour minimum to answer the questions...LOL...
Give me about an hour and I might have the answer....LOL

Dani
___________________________________________________________________________________________

dani

Buzzzzz...Who is Merry Wilson...LOL...Couldn't resist, I love the knowledge testing game shows.

Dani
___________________________________________________________________________________________

(unknown)

OK no more easy questions. What mare was reserve in the aged mare class, reserve in the model class and reserve in the amateur 50 and over class and tied 4th in championship stake in the same year? Here is a hint, she was out of a thoroughbred mare.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

Mason

Only a GUESS but was it Honey Gold ?

Mason
___________________________________________________________________________________________

master

MIzzou was struck by an umbrella, and he was going to win the class.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

(unknown)

Mason,
Good guess and right time frame, but wrong mare.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

twhlady

You guys have lots of data from your collections of books, programs, Blue Ribbons, National Horsemen, etc...I am working entirely from memory.....

Merry Souviner?

sarahlynn
___________________________________________________________________________________________

twhlady

I have some good questions:

What was Millard Wilson's profession?
Where was his business located?
He had a wintertime birthday event to which many were invited......what was the featured food????

There was a family in GA in the funeral business that owned the TWH for years.....What was the family and a major contender they promoted.........?

Anyone know Emmet Guy's profession - other than entertaining us from Center Ring?

OK David Mason - your turn now to think up questions.

sarahlynn
___________________________________________________________________________________________

MarkD1

OK Sarah Lynn,

I've got the answer to one, I think.

Emmitt Guy was the Madison County Sheriff (Jackson, TN) if I'm not badly mistaken. I know he was in politics down there.

MWD
___________________________________________________________________________________________

(unknown)

twhlady,
This mare was a little before Merry Souviner's time.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

dani

Moonglow66,
I give, I could not find anything... Does anyone else have a guess?

Dani
___________________________________________________________________________________________

jwalker

Does anyone remember the old Milky Way Farm?
___________________________________________________________________________________________

Red Ace

Millard Wilson was a Farrier and trainer. His son Abbott is a Saddlebred Trainer in Florida.
Emmett Guy was the announcer at the Celebration for many years.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

Red Ace

Millard was FAMOUS for his barbecued GOAT. Only time I ever ate it and it was delicious.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

twhlady

But Millard Wilson's really special food was oysters even though he did ejnoy the goat barbeque. The oysters were sent in from various areas of the coast for his birthday celebration.........

Do you know where his blacksmith shop was located?

Old Milky Way Farms was in Pulaski......and I think Maborn Magnuson (sp?) was probably the last walking horse person there........he owned a stallion, Sun's Rocket Go Boy.........

sarahlynn
___________________________________________________________________________________________

Mason

You ask me to come up with some questions...Heres one..
Who worked for Steve Hill for MANY yrs (until STEVES Death)and Was one of the most unknown and BEST trainers Of all time?

Mason
___________________________________________________________________________________________

Saddle Tramp

Would that trainer be Johnny Brown?
Moonglow66,

Possibly the mare was Merry Gypsy Rose? If so, she may have placed 4th in the championship stake two times.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

twhlady

David M...
I think that would be Johnny Brown...Incidentally, he was at the show we held in Wartrace in April...and looked just like he did 25 yrs ago.

Remember Steve's ring across Hwy 41 from the barn...
It was completely round....no straightaways...Steve said he could always depend on his horses 'walking the turns'.....Remember the watering trough?

(PAGE 8 )

Saddle Tramp

What was Hill's Perfection's registered name and what was his full brother's name that Bob Campbell showed on the west coast?

As a note, Hill's Perfection was not broken to ride until he was about five years old and had already sired colts before being gelded. So his name could not be changed on his papers.

There is a horse named Zephyr that has been advertised in the Voice in the past year. If you look at his pedigree, Hill's Perfection is on it.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

twhlady

David M.,
Do you know where Johnny Brown is working - and if he continues to work with our horse?

As for winning a prize for the right answer, bringing old memories to the forefront is prize enough for me........and thinking about people we once have known.....some no longer involved with the horses - and others who have died...

sl
____________________________________________________________________________________________

Saddle Tramp

The last time I talked to Johnny, he was still working horses for Mark West and rabbit hunting with his beagles when he can. He also goes to Coffee County basketball games.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

J441

Was it Maycliff Mid Mary?

Last time I saw Johnny he was showing racking & walking horses in Arkansas. I sold him a two year old Delight colt about 25 years ago that I bought from Vance Paschal. I heard he made him into a pretty good juvenile hose. Wish I could remember the name.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

Saddle Tramp

You're really close - Reycliff's Mid Merry.

I wonder if there's two Johnny Brown's. I don't think the one here in Coffee County was in Arkansas. Could be wrong though.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

(unknown)

Saddle Tramp,
Yes it was Merry Gypsy Rose. She was sired by Merry Boy and out of a mare sired by a thoroughbred stallion named Bon Galant.Between 1942 and 1947 she won 8 ribbons from 2ed to 4th at the Celebration, and was twice 4th in the WGC.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

Saddle Tramp

Moonglow,
You almost had me stumped with that one until I dug out one of my old books.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

MINI ME

I have several old sale programs from MILKY WAY back in the 1960's. they had full pedigrees.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

Saddle Tramp

One of those old Milky Way sale programs has a picture
of Ebony Masterpiece's full brother who was marked up like Ebony's Mountain Man.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

J441

Easy way to tell...the Johnny Brown I knew was/is African American. He worked for Joe Webb for a time. Is it the same person?
____________________________________________________________________________________________

Mason

Didnt know the ARK Johnny Brown..the one I know has lived all his life in Coffee County Tn. I think he is one of the best horsemen I've known.Personally I learned more basic horsemanship from him than any other trainer I was around. He NEVER recieved his dues....there are lots of us in the Hall of Fame that havent done nearly as much with this breed as the Beech Grove Johnny Brown. Wish some of the POWER KINGS knew about him.
Mason
____________________________________________________________________________________________

twhlady

Johnny Brown who worked so many years with Steve Hill is not an African American, he is Caucasian. I believe he is a native of the Middle Tennessee area. David Mason would know where he lived.........

And speaking about the 'second in command' at the barns, who was the African American who worked with Sam Paschal for so long?

sl
____________________________________________________________________________________________

Mason

Sam Pascal answer...Felix Johnson
Mason
____________________________________________________________________________________________

(unknown)

Does anyone remember the name, or rather the nickname of the really large black guy that worked for Vic Thompson?
____________________________________________________________________________________________

makethecut

The family in the funeral business in Ga. was Austin Dillon funeral home in Atlanta(across the expressway from the old Fulton County Stadium and now Turner Field).
His granddaughter was Blanche Dillon Thomas and she showed Man of Rythmn in the 70's.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

master

Heres another trivia question: Name the only horse to win the Fun show, then the Columbia spring Jubilee stud class in the same year. Horse, trainer, owners and year.[ hint, this horse never won the WGC ]
____________________________________________________________________________________________

(unknown)

Was it Ebony's Threat and Billy Gray? I know they won both those shows but don't remember if it was the same year.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

Saddle Tramp

What registered ASB stallion (who was last owned by Tom Brown of Columbia TN) was the grand-sire of a two-time WGC walking stallion who in turn sired a two-time WGC walking stallion? Who were these three?

Hint: He put the beautifully hooked ears on the walking horses of today.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

(unknown)

Giovanni, Merry Go Boy and Go Boy;s Shadow.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

Saddle Tramp

You're right again
____________________________________________________________________________________________

J441

Mason, you wrote on one thread about the thrill of seeing a great horse making a pass down the rail...do you remember your exhibition on Super Stock at Heritage Farms in Ooltewah? I remember getting cold chills watching as he passed about three feet in front of me. That horse loved to work.
Also on exhibition was Ramsey Bullington riding a black two year old that went on to be quite a stake horse with Carlton Pitts. He was owned until his death by Art and Francis Barnes. Does anyone remember the horse's name? Does anyone remember who owned Heritage Farms or the two principle stallions that stood there?
____________________________________________________________________________________________

C. Biscuit

Ebony's Valiant Son
____________________________________________________________________________________________

twhlady

Bill Hawk owned Heritage Farms in Ooltewah.

you folks with the books can look up the horses - but I remember one of them didn't really like to canter...

sl
____________________________________________________________________________________________

Saddle Tramp

Where'd my question go? I'll try again.

Starting in the mid-40's and running into the early 50's, Jimmie Joe Murray and later his foundation printed a magazine called The Tennessee Walking Horse. I have one of each of the magazines, how many do I have?

Won't need a book they were Prides Peddler and Delight's Tramp, who was the one that did not like to canter, full brother to Bum and ridden by Billy Gray. Mr. Magic with Albert Lee Rowland, owned by the Wullfs was the one to win the Fun Show and Columbia in back to back weeeks in 1973.

I believe that the "really large" black man who worked for Vic was called "Tiny"

I think that you would have 30 copies of the Tennessee Walking Horse Magazine. Many of the early copies also had supplements showing registrations and transfers.

Try this one...Shocking Blue and Buddy Hugh were a very popular team years ago. We bought I'm Shocking Too from the owner/trainers in Rockwood, TN who started Shocking Blue. They were brothers who owned a car dealership. One had a son who is now an auctioneer.
Can you name the brothers and the son?

Kywalker,
You're very close. There were 29 issues of the magazine.

Saddle Tramp. I guess I counted wrong or counted my duplicate copy.

Are you from Paducah? We live in Fulton.

Speaking of Shocking Blue.....what was the name of Peggy Holloway's horse.........

I believe the brothers from Rockwood you are referring to are Copper & Cotton Bacon, and the sons name is Craig Bacon.

Kywalker, I live in Manchester, TN.

Are these Bacon brothers related to the Col. Bacon from Loudon TN that used to own Strolling Jim?
___________________________________________________________________________________________

J441

Big Daddy is correct. The Bacons were fine people who raised some very nice horses. Craig really put a "velvet mouth" on his colts. We bought horses, cars, trucks, and a 6 horse show truck bed from them years ago.

Now that you bring up car dealers, let's see how many of our horsemen had car dealerships - and maybe the type.

1. Bacon family - what kind?
2. Joe Van Clayton - Arab,AL -Chevy
3. Fray Escue - KY -Pontiac
4. Dude Riddle - Martinsville, VA Cadillac
5. Roy Davis - Calhoun GA - Chevy
6. Bonnie Davis - Rome GA - Chevy
7. James Corlew - Chevy

I've named the cars........moonglow perhaps you can name the horses......I know some of them, but you have all the reference books.......

What horseman was Dude Riddle's famous customer?

Does no one remember Peggy Holloway's horse?

The Bacons had a Ford dealership in Rockwood.
Quarles (don't remember the first name) had a used car dealership in Chattanooga. I think Ed Cotter has a dealership, and Tom Barclay had one in Albertville, AL.
Pretty interesting. Joe Van Clayton owned several notables including Setting Sun's Apollo. Bonnie Davis owned several greats along with Roy, including Sensational Shadow. Dobbs Bros Ford in Memphis is owned by the Crutchfields.
Another bunch of horsemen owned funeral homes, like Jimmy Williamson (and Chuck), Ross Lane, and several more.
I should know Peggy's horse but just can't recall.

Was Ms. Holloway's horse named Blue Magic?

BUBBADOG

C.C. & Duncan Johnson owned a Cadillac dealership in Augusta, Ga.-
Back to the subject of funeral homes - J.B. Hunter (Susan's) dad owned Hunter Funeral Home in Sparta, Tn.

I think the McBrayer family owned a dealership in south Alabama.

And Charlie Warren who rode Ebony Rose also owned JerniganWarren Funeral home here in my home town, Fayetteville, NC.

Who was the family in the funeral business in GA that had either Go Boy's Cheerleader or Go Boy's Caretaker?

I also remember a georgeous little girl (must be grown by now) from Tuscaloosa. She rode Roll Tide in youth classes. I think her family owned a dealership. They were not in the horse business for a long time.

And thanks for the name of Peggy's horse. When Shocking Blue was remembered, it brought back memories of Peggy's good rides on her horse - with a similar color and name.........

Thinking about all these people who were most avid supporters of our industry - both as competitors and as significant financial contributors to the horse shows - brings back lots of memories.......Lots of these people who were from many other states were great supporters of our breed, not only on the national level, but also in their various home areas. Seems like our industry has shrunk significantly.

I had forgotten that the Johnson family from Augusta operated a car dealership. I remember attending the Masters one day with Mr. CC - many years ago. He also rescued me when I was traveling from TN to NC with a load of horses and had a mechanical problem with the truck.

Jeff and Sherry Gamble owned 18 funeral homes at one time. They owned Olympic Generator, Wired, Pusher's All Colors, etc. They also owned minor league baseball teams. They were dick Peebles customers.

Jeff and Sherry's funeral home in Winchester is the one that took care of all the Bledsoe family when David died at the Celebration. They managed the funeral in Birmingham for us....and d**k was so much help...........old friends like the Peebles and the Gamble families are cherished.......so many memories.

Dear Everett.........

Instead of thanking me for this thread, I think we all need to thank David and Christy for giving us this fantastic Message Board.......(every once in a while he will add a comment .... ) I have reached the age that I really like to think of old friends who have moved on or died, and the great old horses we knew and loved......

It's a fine mess we are in now Everett. Guess you see all the problems and the discord running rampant..... I know you are glad that you and your family are in FL.

Actually, I thought about the Majors when the mention of Shocking Blue appeared on this thread.......I think you managed the beautiful stables and farm at Bahama for Peggy when she first built it.....correct??? For the life of me, I could not remember the name of her horse - could actually see her going around the ring though.

Keep well, dear friend.
