| Maybe, but that's not it either. This was not only a big change for the Celebration, but a big change for our country as well... | |

| There was additional seating added at some point but I do not recall when this was. Additional seating and tickest sales would generate revenue for the county so I could see this as being beneficial to Bedford Coun | |

| I just rememberd where I read about the additional seating..it was in "Decade in Review". I searched through this section because I was thinking it was in an article here but the minute I posted that last post it hit me! In 1961 they added Box Seats at ringside. In 1965 they added 2200 reserved seats which increased seating capacity to 22200 and also erected a 3 tier press box. I knew I had read that somewhere...I love it when I finally find something that was bugging me!!!! | |

Samara, you are correct. I also notice there was a "colored" section in the bleachers as well. I'm not exactly sure when this was changed, but I'm guessing it was the following year, when the Civil Rights Act was passed. I also notice there was a swimming pool in the Northwest corner of the grounds (lower left corner), adjacent to the picnic grounds. This was not there in my years of attendance. I am familiar with that area, since I stayed in the campground on several occasions. I think it would have been about where the showers were during the years I went to the Celebration. I do remember going out to a park on the North end of town to swim at a public pool a couple of times when I was a youngster. | |

| Yes, there was a swimming pool back in old lot one of the campgrounds...exhibitors (at least juvenile riders) received free passes to the pool....That was quite a treat for many of us and a social gathering spot. I know it was there in the late 60's and cannot remember when it closed. | |

| The pool was still there in the early seventies when I started going to the celebration(1972 was my first year).....I remember we stayed in a camper right next to our stalls(barn 45) back in 73-76 I think.

| And no one had ever even heard of walkie talkies. Think that this was one of those obscure canter classes? | |

| That is what I is cememted in my memory....I've never seen the Celebration look any other way. Woody wants me to go this year and I would love to; but I will not be seeing a class that looks like this! That makes me more than a little sad. How many trainers can you pick out in this group? I see Bob Cherry; Joe Martin; and C.A. Bobo. I can't tell who the woman is because she is looking down...hair doesn't look like Judy Martin but does look a little like Sandra Wilson's? I see other faces that I couldn't be sure about...possibly David Mason and Jimmy Holloway?? | |

| One of the reasons that Celebration classes are not as large is due to class splits (last year my division had 3 splits in the 3 year old amateur mare/gelding class), removing endurance as a component. You can argue that either way. | |

| MM...I didn't think of that. Some of the classes would probably be close to the same size if there were not splits...plus you have 3 yr old ridden by amateurs (for instance) as well; which takes your 3 yr old horses out of the 3 yr old open division. If you had all your 3 yr olds in a 3 yr old open division....mares/geldings/stallions ridden by trainers...then you would have a very big class?? Of course; then you would have less for the amateur to show; so these "new classes" seem to be a good thing for owners that want to show their horses competitively. A 3yr old stands a much better chance against another 3 yr old than they would if they went in the open amateur. | |

| Hill, quite a few will show in both amateur and open divisions...the classes are usually separated by a few nights allowing both the amateur and trainer to show the same horse. | |
