| 3. Jimmy Hicks at J/W Hicks Stables/Hidden Valley Stables....Dick moved to Hidden Valley about ~ 74-75 and showed Winston's Black Baron until his death in the ring, Huntsville, AL in the Fall, 1978. Easy for me to remember as I catch rode him in amateur 78. | |

| As I looked at these horses and riders; I realized many of them showed at the "one-nighter" shows that you would find every Saturday night during the summer in the middle Tennessee area in the 1970s. During show season there was always a show somewhere every weekend. Is that still the case? Can you find a show somewhere in the area every Saturday night or has that scaled back? I only wonder because there was talk about the size of the classes at the Celebration and I also heard someone else mention that the small one-night shows were struggling?? | |

| Hill, in the 60's my family and I would go to 50-55 of these one night shows every summer. Many weekends, we would go to shows on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. These were all within driving range of Shelbyville. We never stayed overnight. I suppose that was still the case in the 70's as well, but I was doing other things then (namely working and raising my oldest and living away from that area). These shows were well attended by all of the trainers in the area and they brought their best stock. There was no dodging competition and hiding. Everyone lurked around the trailers to see what was there and waited anxiously for the Stake Class where you would be entertained by some great horses and trainers trying to best each other. Communities supported these shows with some large and often vocal crowds. Sadly, that is not the case today. One night shows are struggling and trainers don't support them like they should. There are a few who bring horses every time the gates open, but you don't see the big Stake Classes like you used to. Even the "big name" shows are low on entries and low on attendance these days. I don't know if it is the economy or if there are just too many other things to take away the interest. Streaming of the shows is a good/bad thing. I wouldn't get to see so much if it weren't for the streams, but I am sure there are some who would go to the show instead of watching from home if it wasn't being streamed. Also, and I know Smitty doesn't like to talk about this on here, but it cost quite a bit to put on a show and, if the government shows up, managers just cannot afford to take that financial hit so a lot of civic clubs are looking at other means that are more certain to raise funds. But, back to your original question, I think you could find somewhere to go every weekend but just not the big events they used to be. | |

| We are losing one nighters all over the country, and if they go so will show horses, Many of the shows that are left are being put on by older folks like us and there doesn't appear to be a younger generation coming along to fill the void. Add that to the economy and the overall lack of interest in horses today, as witnessed by an all time low in horse prices, and it is a very dire situation. Has anyone noticed that we don't even hear anything about the Celebration sales anymore? I hear from folks that were there that some really nice yearlings sold for $100 to $300. | |

| Important to note that ALL breeds are hurting, not just the TWH. The Thoroughbred industry is way down and I noticed a big drop-off in attendance at the ASB Championships as well, compared to years ago. I blame it all on FARMVILLE!!!! | |

| There was a multi-million dollar purchase for a yearling this weekend at the Keeneland Fall Sale. The Middle-Eastern owners are even scaling back their purchases. | |

| It is sad that this has happened. I spent my summers in middle Tennessee in the late '60s and early to mid '70s and as you said OGM; we were out the door on Thursday or Friday and only home it seemed to change horses...and maybe catch a couple of hours of sleep if time allowed. It was a fun and exciting time!!! There were always good horses to see; friends to visit...it was sort of a "county fair" like atmosphere that ran all summer long!! Owners got their money's worth when you were showing like that!! It does not sound good; but I hope that things will somehow take a turn for the better; because IMO: without the one-nighters the show horse will be a thing of the past!! | |
