| I think it was 1976 Ed, but I could be off a little. (no pun intended) It was right around that time though, and it strengthened the HPA quite a bit. | |

| Dutch, I found one named Merry Boy's Sun Light, chestnut stud foaled 6-14-67. He was by Merry Boy's Cadillac out of a line bred Midnight Of Oakwood mare. Could this be him? | |

| Dutch, I can read it on IPEDS but no way to forward it. I'm sure TWHBEA could send you a copy, I understand they are not very busy right now. | |

| Would Vienna be the name of the city. I think a sausage was also named the same.

| Magic Marker recently asked "What happened to the 1-2-3-4 beat?" I said "it looks like it's gone the way of the Dodo".... The gait of the TWH has certainly changed since I was involved in showing. In many respects, I miss the old rhythm and head shake and deep-walking back ends. When I first started watching some of the new video about 4 years ago, I admit I wasn't always impressed........and in some instances, I still am not. But I have come to realize a few things since that time. These horses are evolving and progresssing. True, some things have been sacrificed, but that is due largely to new regulations, no doubt about it. I didn't think they were doing as much as before, but David Mason told me they definitely were. When talking of the horses of the past, he said "They weren't doing as much as we thought they were." I couldn't believe this, but after viewing some of the videos from the 70's and even earlier, I have to agree, for the most part. The TWH today is doing MORE and doing it more naturally and easier than ever before. True, the rhythm and timing and motion are not what they were before, but that's because the animal itself has changed. Go back and look at some of the old photos from the old days. The breed was mostly low-headed. You'll see that from the 70's through today, the TWH's neck has progressively come more and more straight up out of his shoulders, much like a Saddlebred. They are wearing the bridle better than ever. Still, I miss the old head shake. I miss the deep, long-striding backends. These were exciting things to me. If I trained a TWH today...........I would be tempted to go to the junkyard and find and old VW Bug, hook it up to a harness and make those suckers PULL that thing around the pasture. I know my thinking is wrong on that, but that's just me......... | |

| Funny you said that about the VW's. My dad built alot of training carts out of VW front ends. Several trainers around Shelbyville had one that he built. | |

| When Pride of Midnight was put into the breeding world, his influence changed the Walking Horses. Old pride had a "Gooseneck" and his colts were borned with a head set. If the cross was correct, you had a winner. Natural head set makes training horses much easier. Also their neck came out of their shoulders much better than some of the breeding sallions of Old,which made it easier for them to get up off the ground. Just look at some pictures of Pride stock and you will see what I mean. | |
