| I remember that so well. I was standing behind the box seats in the first turn when he came in. That was a BOLD TROT if I'm remembering right! I felt bad for Herbert. I have always thought he was a good chap. I'm sure that's one he'd like to forget, and I can relate to that. | |

| No, not that I'm aware of, although I could be mistaken. At least that's not the answer I'm seeking. | |

| Was it Russ? I understand he was a north Alabama native, but unsure the location. I do not remember him from his Alabama years. I know there is a Hartselle, AL near Decatur/Priceville arena. | |

| Here's a trivia question currently posted on Walker's West. I have no idea of the answer. In 1914, the Tennessee State Fair's Plantation Stallion Class for 3 YO and OVER was won by a horse called Allen the Second. Reserve went to a horse called Denmark. Who were these horses and what were their registered TWHBEA names? | |

| Allen The Second was Hunter's Allen and Denmark was Roan Allen F-38. | |

| I would imagine that the Denmark name was hung on him because of his maw's side of the family. F38 was out of a mare named Gertrude F84, and she was by a Saddlebred stud named Royal Denmark (He was not dual registered). Just a guess, but it makes sense to me. Evidently F38 had some close ties to the saddlebred world. He showed in the plantation classes as a walking horse, but could also slow gait, rack, fox trot and even square trot and wear fine harness well enough to beat some good saddlebred horses. Must have been quite a beast. | |

| The fact that this horse could perform so many gaits under saddle in winning form AND trot well enough to show and win in fine harness speaks volumes about his quality.
There is a very famous saddlebred breeding farm called Calloway Hills. The names of the horses they've produced reads like a who's who in ASB society. The lady who founded this breeding dynasty has made the statement in a soft KY drawl that "You can teach a mule to rack, but only a real Saddlebred can wear patent leather show harness."
True words, those. | |
