| S69...Sorry to hear about that. I remember the night Grand Slam collapsed, but he survived. A few years back, Bernie Duncan was riding a 2 yr old at Hole-in-the-wall, and it died in the ring. It was a colt from tha hollar. Many performance horses need JUGS, during the Celebration. | |

| I remember seeing another horse dead in that warm-up ring too. I want to say it was one of Elmore Brock's. It was a big bay horse. Does anyone else remember that or am I maybe thinking of the one you all are talking about?
At Churchill Downs the other day, the guide told us they put down 14 - 17 every racing season. He said the old time vets preferred to take them back to the barn and shoot them because they said it was a much quicker death than euthanasia. Personally, I couldn't be the one to do that. My list of jobs I can't/wouldn't want to do is much longer than the list of jobs I want.

| I remember about 1 oclock one morning at the Cel., a road horse driver cutting across the wet grass & causing the animal to break a front leg. They took him out in a trailer & then put him down. I believe a bullet is better (quicker) than medicine & alot more economical to the owner. | |

| Gonna have to jump in here and put in my two cents worth. Having witnessed euthanasia on a daily basis for many years, I have very strong feelings about the different methods. Older animals have slower circulatory systems - therefore it can take a while for an animal to go down with an injection. This is especially true on large animals. I have seen it take what seemed like forever before a horse drops. It is awful. However, if the animal is already sedated, the process is very peaceful. The new graduates are coming out of vet school being taught to install a catheter before administering the drug. This method also has its drawbacks as it is not easy to place a catheter on a frightened animal. This makes the procedure last longer and with owners waiting nearby - hearing their animals struggling is a nightmare for everyone. Sorry if this depressed ya'll - and I certainly don't mean to sound matter of fact about such a delicate subject. | |

| Just don't shoot them, i know thats the Fastest way but , thats the reason i Could not be in that Business Bubbadog I have no problem eating Pork ,Beef , Chicken if someone else kills it, But i would not watch anyone shoot them then eat it, thats why I don't Hunt. I don't care if someone else does that , i just want do it, I would not have a problem if my life was in Danger to shoot an animal BUT that would be the ONLY way for me

| Tain't easy sometimes E. But we are so fortunate to have the benefit of euthanasia - domestic animals just don't seem to lie down and die like they used to. It sure ends a lot of suffering for the critters - but Lord it's hard on the owners - I have seen the toughest men just crumble over the letting go of a pet. It's harder on us than on them - they have no fear of the future - no concept of what is about to happen. But I shed a tear with every single one. | |

| I'm with you E. I went to visit friends one summer and they raised chickens. We had chicken and dumplings for dinner. I couldn't eat it, because it had just been running around in the backyard earlier. | |

| I'm the world's biggest wuzzy when it comes to animals and the loss of them...I can't stand to see them put down, just can't watch. However, being raised on a farm in Missouri and spending years in Nebraska, I sure can put away some fried chicken, cornfed beef and country ham. I'll always remember a lady with the Human Soc. here in Shelbyville telling me years ago she often worried to death about some of the dogs & cats she placed in homes but never lost a night's sleep over ones she had to put down. | |

| MIB,
I don't think so. She did tie third in the 3 Yr. Old Mare class in 1950 [Jack Slayden up for Dr. Hardeman]. Also, she was the 2nd dam of Ebony's Lady K. & Delight's Time to Deal.

| I did see Joanna a couple times. Every horse I have owned, that's received a Celebration ribbon (while I owned it)...her name is or was on the papers. | |
