PostSubject: Re: Trivia Archive 5   Trivia Archive 5 - Page 37 EmptyMon Oct 04, 2010 2:39 pm

As a kid in the mid 80's, my dad worked at Northfork Stables as farrier/trainer alongside Johnny Brown and Bobby Fann. We used to go to the old Brantley farm and trim the Broodmares feet and keg shoe a few. I can remember being in awe that I was standing in the barn where the Walking horse practically started from. I remember the old spring well where they watered horses underneath the huge oak to the left of the barn, and the sulfur water there.
Mr. Brantley gave dad permission to deer hunt there as well. I went on my first deer hunt there with Dad in 1987.

Nearly every year I drive by there and see what it looks like while I am in town for the Celebration.

If it wasn't for the efforts of Mr. Brantley, there may have never been a TWH. Here's another view:

For the next couple of months I'll be posting a series ran by the Voice back in 1972 which covers all the significant events in the industry for that time period. Some interesting and long forgotten stuff in here and I'll be posting some of it every couple of days or so. Feel free to comment between my posts.

Harlinsdale Then & Now

Below is an old aerial photo of Harlinsdale Farm and also some newer satellite shots showing the beginnings of new developments that have swallowed up the old farm. The satellite shots are most likely out of date as well and I expect most ALL of the space around the old barn is now taken up by new buildings. The barn area has been preserved, but it's still sad to see the old place basically gone, for the most part.

Smitty...Thank You for leaving us some good reading info while you are gone! I enjoyed this and the old Trivia Archive posts are a lot of fun to read also!! Hope you're catching a bunch of fish!!

Pertaining to the article above: I was noticing the rates for the Voice and my first thought was that they seemed high for 1962?? Did anyone else think that? Of course by what I can only imagine they are today; I bet they are low...but I think about the early '60s and would think that most people felt 250.00 & 125.00 was expensive for a one-time ad?? Of course as you read on you see that Shadow's Headman sold at a sale for $32500.00 so maybe not. Maybe this was when the industry began to see it's first influx of high dollar horses. I know they were still selling good in the mid 70s. I'm not up on prices of today but saw posted on here where some young horses had sold very low at a sale...that is sad.

Sen61...I knew that you had won the Amateur World Championship on Mr. Sensation but did not realize he had won the Gelding Championship 6 times...Very Impressive!!! I would guess he is the only horse in history to win it that many times?? Did you own him when he won them as well? I think I remember one picture in particular of the two of you...are there any pictures on Trivia?

Fair Warning was bought by Duane Church of N Wilkesboro NC for his daughter Debbie to show in the Juvenile Division...this was probably in '66. She was put in training with Jack Johnson...I remember her at the barn; she was a beautiful mare. I don't remember how many years Debbie showed her...if I have my years straight; she showed her in '66 and placed third in Juvenile; but I can't remember how many more years Debbie showed after that?? Debbie was a very pretty girl; had long very blonde hair...do any of you remember her? I believe she lost interest when she went to college and I think Duane bred Fair Warning at some point also. I know the mare had foals...wasn't Copy's Fair Warning out of her? Does anyone know who was her last owner of record? How many foals did she have?

No, I did not own him when he won the Gelding Classes. He was also Reserve World Grand Champion a couple of times I believe it was. After I purchased him he was strictly for me to show amateur, but think he might have slipped on the van unknown to me several times when I wasn't in Shelbyville, to pick up the extra winnings at one-night shows. Think there is an action shot of him on trivia...unfortunately I don't have any candids, might have a couple of newspaper clipping pictures I'll try to get posted one of theses days

Deedy, I don't know what happened to the action shot of Mr. Sensation with you riding.......I seem to have lost it. Please send another if you can. I do have this action shot with Steve Hill riding:
