| History Buffs, The above pamplet is the most rare piece of propaganda, that I have. I have dealt in much stuff & this is the onliest one I've ever seen. It has every Stud & Jack, Registered & not, of every breed in every county in Tennessee in 1943 listed in it. The spotted mare below, might have been the first ever double reg TWH. She was a true tobiano (pinto). | |

| The owners' statement on the above mare says that she is bred to "the good stallion of Mr. Baker's in Centerville". That is probably Baker's Allen, a stallion that stood in that vicinity in the early 40's. Also, that is probably the man that raised the great mare Dixie Allen Baker. She was the foundation of Rock McEwen's & Billy Maddox's outstanding breeding programs. They were all from the Duck River/Shady Grove area between Centerville & Columbia. | |

| DB...Billy was a very knowledgeable breeder and I certainly miss him. Didn't he raise RAVISHING RUBY? | |

| The tobiano mare does raise some questions. Years ago the Breeders' Assoc. said there was no such thing as a spotted walking horse, (When the spots stated becoming really popular in the 90's). I did find in an early stud book that had a "spotted mare" no name regestered. Today the TWHBEA has opened their arms to spots, rather than let them get out from underneath the Breeders umberella like they did the Racking Horse registery, I guess. Working in the spotted industry, I find I have more questions everyday about the breeding of spots. So I was glad to see your info Sadlbum, I'd never seen it before either. Whats your take OHM & Deltaboy? Interesting history... | |

| Deltaboy, Since Truman Ward was on the above Board, reckon that picture of the mare & foal were from Maryland Farms? Have You ever seen one of these pamplets & if yes, do You have one? I think this one came from Bailey Evans of Wenonah Farms 101 Choice Allens. | |

| Billy loved Ravishing Ruby so much....She had a filly that Bill started. When the filly started hitting and you could see how good she was going to be Billy took her home because he always said if Ruby ever had a filly he would keep her.
The McEwen's and Billy Maddox had some great colts that we have either had in our sale or started. |

| OHM,
As CB alluded, Billy Maddox did raise Ravishing Ruby [a descendant of Dixie Allen Baker]. I believe he sold her to Joe & David Ragan for $26,000, tying the record price for a broodmare set by Impala's Shadowette [dam of Bummin Around] when Shadow Valley sold her to Bill Hawk.
S61,
I think you are correct in implying that the Breeders' Assn. made a mistake when they let Racking Horse registrations get away from them. I'll bet they wish they had them now.
SB,
No, I have never seen one of those pamplets. It is amazing to think how much effort & research must have gone into producing it. I don't know if the cover photo was taken at Maryland Farms or not. The "western-style" crossed plank fence is still being used at Haynes Haven. It could have come from there.

| SB,
These sale catalogs are absolute treasures. They are some of your best postings ever. Note that the entry after Lady Lee was consigned by Verna Lee Farms. That's Gene Goff, owner of Old Glory & later a leading Thoroughbred breeder [Nodouble, etc.]. Of course, Deep Purple was the dam of Mack K's Handshaker. Good stuff!
As I have mentioned before, I think my grandfather's first Walking Horse was purchased out of the C.G. Smith Sale in Blytheville, Ark. in the early 40's. That sale was one of the biggest outlets for exporting Walking Horses out of Middle Tennessee at that time. Thanks for including it.

| Blogsters Look at one of the sale catalogs - If anyone has any doubts about where John T. Carter originated from. The green Evins catalog, was from Dan Evins founder of the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store Restaurant. Thats His brother Eddie, a retired State Trooper. About 15 years ago, I called Dan about Him buying this, but He already had one. He was very friendly & thanked me for calling. The picture is at the end of a Grandstand on their farm. Uncle Jimmy Cunningham owned the Hereford Manor sale at Zelienople Pa. Thats close to where Odie Adcock an Auctioneer/Trainer & Billy Lyles another trainer migrated to. Notice that Eddie Bryant was working sales back then.

If you'll go back through the pages, there's a fantastic shot from the front of the Showtime magazine. If you can't find it, let me know and I look it up again.

| OHM & Big'n, I will try to get a photo posted of PST before long. I have been collecting these thangs for over 40 yrs. I bought these last post' about 15 years ago. Some of these, I've had multiples, some of them, I've never seen 2. I think I know Who gathered & preserved these. He must have been on every horse auction & Hereford cattle sale & Horse magazine mailing list in the USA back in the 40's. I just kept the cream of the crop. | |

I have tried to pattern my broodmare operation after Billy & Pete Banks & I know that they tried to pattern theirs after Rock McEwen. They, along with Leslie Dycus, Carl Harris, Leslie White & a few others gave the Duck River/Shady Grove/Williamsport area on the Maury/Hickman county line an incredible concentration of quality broodmares that would be hard to duplicate anywhere. Most of them were very loyal customers of Harlinsdale.
