I was looking at a 56 BR today & there was on page 17 an ad for the Murray Farm sale. On this ad was a picture about 1 1/2 inches square of a young blonde lady by the name of Mrs Doug Stubblefield,She was riding a black horse. She could have been about 22 & if you rolled back the calender to 48 then that would have put her at 14 on the spotted pony. The pony picture could have been labeled years after the picture was taken. That could be why theres no Nancy Stubblefield listed in the pony classes, because her maiden name would be different. I hope that this deduction makes sense. I have Dougs obituary somewhere & it says he died at the Coffee Co. hospital in Manchester & He wasn't very old. He was one of the trainers of Midnight Secret. I have found a Nancy Tom Leeper of Knoxville in the 48, 3 gaited pony class. A Norman Stokes won the 47 Colored Grooms class on Strolling Jim. Remember that stone.

I called the number on this thread for Nancy Stubblefield & they didn't know Doug. I called Russell Pate & He only remembered that she was a Doll. He said Wallace should Know. I looked in the 50 BR & a Nancy Bragg from McMinnville placed 10th in the pony class in 49 on Liberty Bell. Now the little pony favored Miss Liberty but this could still be a coincidence. In the 51 BR Doug was in Jackson managing a barn, but he looked very young. Why don't we keep working on this & jawing about it until I can talk to old Cuz at the Sandcreek sale on Saturday, that is if Smitty don't Gong us.

I think Connie is referring to the Bragg Bldg on the MTSU campus, but I may be wrong. It was named after former state Rep John Bragg, as well as the Woodbury Hwy. I am sure this is the same Nancy Bragg, you found in the old show records. If Ms. Martha and Mr. William say it was, then it was. I have the utmost confidence in S&M INVESTIGATIONS.

Super Sport was a beautiful horse and had such a gentle spirit about him. Ronnie Vincent had him standing out of Jimmie and Glenda Combs' barn in Alvaton, KY when we had a horse there.

That's the man himself, Ronnie Vincent. Did you ever know his assistant trainer in Alvaton, Randy Rhea? Ronnie taught Randy in high school and then hired him to train with him. They were two peas in a pod.

I knew Randy and his wife Connie too. Much fun.

I remember Randy got on that CMT game show "Fandango" which was a country version of "Name That Tune." We all gathered and watched it up at Ronnie & Kathy's house. Randy ran out on stage with a lot of pep and energy and we just knew he was gonna win it all. He answered the first question right off the bat and was off to a great start. Something happened after that though.........he got a glazed, deer in the headlights look on his face and never answered another question the rest of the show.

We were dismayed! Randy said later that he got to looking out at the audience and developed a bad case of stage shock!

I'm glad that I got on here before that old Deltaboy, because He could answer this too. That is Billy Mason who at the time was Buck Brannans son inlaw the owner & He is aboard Old Wilsons Ace. They were at Elm Grove Farm in Belvidere Tn & Franklin Co. After divorcing the Brannan Gal, Billy ended up with a tractor dealorship in Winchester. He died about 4 years ago. Old Wilsons Ace had stints at the Murray farm in Lewisburg, Wilson farm in Galatin & in Mansfield Ohio, where Charles Lowery was for awhile.

I really don't know who the man or boy is on the stocking legged pony, but will guess. The Guy looks like Dick West. The pony looks like the one Floyd Carothers is holding out in front of the Wartrace Walking Horse stables along with Henry Davis. We have had that picture posted on here before. The current picture is from a collage of past winners in a newer Blue Ribbon, I think.

That pony is Walking Dream and she was the 1940 & 1941 Walking Pony 58" & Under World Champion. I don't have any info on the rider, but this daughter of Giovanni was owned by W.H. Davis and was one of the very first walking pony champions.

Henry Davis & W.H. Davis were one & the same. On the above Pony the rider was Jack Rowland. I have a rare book that tells all the winners & riders, 1939 thru 1957. Hows about you looking at the picture in front of the livery stable type barn that you have in the photo collage or in the first Echo of Hoofbeats & see if you don't think that is the same pony.

All, thank you to each of you who sent me a note and most especially for your prayers. I am still in a lot of pain and ended up only having one knee done. I had a lot of damage and am not able to walk for six weeks. I am in a wheel chair because my other knee is bad and cannot hold the entire weight of my body. I also had an allergic reation to the iodine that was used during surgery. I could not get off my oxygen and ended up being out for several hours.
I appreciate so much my friends on WHT. Your concern has meant the world to me.

E...You won't believe this but I got an email from Joyce today. Poor woman fell last night, (walking in stilettos) turned her foot and broke it. She spent all night in MTMC ER, but came home this morning and says she will be fine. Her main concern is she will not be able to show HE'S A REBEL at the trainers show. I didn't know Charlie, but as a teen I got to visit the Bobo stable once. I had never visited a high profile Tenn training barn before and was quite shy and wide-eyed. I remember just trying to stay out of the way. Nobody paid me much mind or spoke to me, but Charlie looked my way and gave me a wink.

That has stuck in my mind all these years and made a positive impression on me. Sometimes you can know what someone is like from the simplest actions.

I remember a few years ago when MR. Charlie had his own training barn. That was the only time i ever met him. He took us from one end to the other and told us about every horse in the barn, Will never forget that super nice person.
Another gracious host was Ramsey Bullington. They had every cross tie holding a horse and he took time out to talk to some common folks.
Another nice person we stopped to see was Sammy Day.

Yes, that's the Rat Pack. That might be Joey Bishop in the back center, but it's hard to tell. The Pack hung out in Vegas at The Sands, which was imploded in 1996. It was on the site of what is now The Venetian, which is right across the street from where I stayed when I went out there. Joey is not in this photo either for some reason.

That Horse thats sitting like a Dawg is Allens Golden Zephr by Barkers Golden Moonbeam. At the time of the picture he was owned by P.K. Fisher of Soudertown Pa. He later became Trigger Junior. He was raised by Oscar C.O. Barker of Readyville near Woodbury Tn. This horse can be found as the sire on some papers. The real Trigger was not a Walking Horse & I have a Video where Roy said that Trigger never bred a mare because they didn't want Him Studdy.

I found the name of the rider of Sabre's Rocket. It is Mrs. R.S. Barnwell Jr. up from Shreveport La. That picture was on the cover of Saddle & Bridle, July, 1967. Some of the other Walking Horses pictures include: The Entertainer, Rodger's Perfectin, Carbon Copy and Shadow's Red Warrior.

The photo above, of Shadow's King Cotton was on the cover of Saddle & Bridle, July, 1966. Some of the Walking Horses pictures include: Mark's Sundust, Jolly Roger, Waltzing Matilda, Our Masterpiece, Lady Godiva and Mr. Executive.

My, it was a different day when Walking Horses & Saddlebreds SHARED the same magazine, and from what I hear from that era, Saddle & Bridle was quite popular.

All I said was he was big & pretty and I would have liked to have seen him. I remember Bobby Brown. His family built the the Waggoners a house across the road from the farm. I thought that was the greatest thing ever! It was a really nice house and the whole operation was out in the country. Now it is VERY MUCH in the city. The main training barn burned some years ago but they replaced it with a little barn. I can't remember who lives there now. I used to know. Mason, is it the Harrisons? The main house is still a pretty place. Did someone say that Bobby wound up somewhere up East? And, yes, he could certainly show a Saddlebred!! I always enjoyed, and still miss, the days when there was a mixture of Saddlebreds and Walking Horses at the shows.

When the Browns built that house for Ellis it was the biggest house Id ever seen.The barn burned several yrs ago part of it is still left...the World Outreach Church(Dr. Jackson)has bought the farm,Mrs Harrison is still living in the Old Home(main place) and has lifetime rights to it I understand. I have lost track of Bobby. Not sure hes still alive??

That's Toby Green (but not THE Toby Green) and Sandy Sun Sally. She's the grandmammy of Paint the Town. This Toby is Charlie Green's granddaddy. Sally was from Giles County.

I was waiting for your reply, and you are right about Sandy's Sun Sally and Toby Green from Giles County. The horse pictured was her dam, Nell Overstreet and her owner Melvin Overstreet. Nell Overstreet was accepted into the TWH registry based on her ability to produce get that performed the walking horse gait.

Several Notes: First, I know nothing.....still learning!.......but this is stuff I have found elsewhere and I cannot verify it's validity.
Also, when I say "spotted" I am referring to the "Tobiano" pattern. Here is an excerpt taken off another site:

In the early days of the TWHBEA, there were probably several Tobiano horses accepted when the registry was open, as there were no restrictions as to a horse's color or it's markings.

However, since the tobiano horses were not popular during the 40's through the 70's, the tobiano marked horses almost died out except for one breeder, the late Toby Green of Giles County, Tennessee, and his mare: Sandy Sun's Sally.

There were no safeguards built into the TWHBEA registry system prior to 1989, and several tobiano marked horses were accepted into the registry. These horses have been "grandfathered" into the Tennessee Walking Horse registry, and are now accepted as registered TWHs.

However, their tobiano markings are from unknown parentage!

Verified by TWH pedigree research, Sandy Sun's Sally is the only Tobiano TWH who has passed the tobiano markings down through the generations, (in each generation) with progeny alive today, making Sandy Sun's Sally virtually:

Joyce Myers still has IRONWORKS foretop, on display in her home. The best one is Ellen still has THE SHOCKING BLUE'S bones and also his foretop. I'm not making this up! After the McJunkins sold the Tx barn, where SHOCKING BLUE was buried, Ellen had them dig up his remains and she brought them (what was left) to TN.

This reminds me of when I had quarter horses at the old Solitude Farm. Mr. HL had been gone for many yrs, seems like he passed on during the mid 60's (some of you will know). His son Lee (now deceased) rented the place to one of my qtr horse trainers for many years. At that time every thing was just as Mr. Worrell had left it. One day they decide to clean out all the WH (head shakers they use to say) memorabilia and I was there. I explained to them this was not JUNK and it should not go to the dump,(now landfill but still a dump where I come from). Lee gave me permission to take whatever I wanted. I had planned to pick up a load that weekend but had to work instead. Ofcourse that's when they held the barn cleaning. It makes me sick to think about it. Wish I had known SADLBUM and MASON then, bet they would have driven to Goodlettsville that night!

Yes I would have been glad to have driven to Goodlettesville for some free Horse literature. It's sickening to hear tales of people throwing away good stuff. I just hope Someone that appreciates TWH history has Jim Gandy's books. I have driven to Knoxville, Signal Mountain, Ardmore etc. to buy stuff. In the past I have bought big Lots of stuff, kept what I didn't already have & sold or traded the rest. I have about all thats ever been printed concerning the TWH. I lack a few of the one night Cel programs from the early 40's & about a doz of the Voice & about 6 Murray Farm sale catalogs from the 40's having all pertinent matl. I have very little that was given to me. I can recall a very fine Gentleman that did give me a few things one time & that was Bobby Shannon. Others have given Me a few things for which I am also grateful.

Merry Legs was one of the very early horses bred by Albert Dement. She was by Allan F-1 if I'm not mistaken.

As for Wink's horse......that was taken in 2001 at Belfast. The name of the horse was Billie White Socks.

I first thought it was a picture of Buddy Kirby. His feet were always toed out like this picture when he rode. But I really liked that Cricket horse and you were my next guess because of the way he set up in this picture.
You let me ride him a few times and I thought he was a super good horse.

Not only was he involved in the trial, he also was in a MOVIE about the trial in which he portrayed HIMSELF!

Later I sold the hard bounds to Russell & Dickie Pate, because their Mother was the managing editor & they didn't have any. A couple of years ago I replaced the 48 by buying it on Ebay.

I could have made it to the end, but he was about frozen, so we left before the end. Someone mentioned the Butner family not too long ago. They are sitting in front of me. I'm not sure of the correct medical term, but Bill suffered an aneurysm or some kind of heart attack a couple of yrs ago. I was told it was the same thing that killed John Ritter and you seldom survive. I also heard he has something cancerous on his back and it's inoperatable. He has to use a walker now and may weigh 150 lbs. Peggy Mervine takes care of Bill but he's able to get out and drive. S & M can probably give you a more complete update. It's very sad.

Correct on both counts!

I find this horse's breeding very interesting. He has Ebony Masterpiece, The Pusher, Threat's Supreme and Delight's Adonis in his pedigree all going back to Midnight Sun, Sun's Delight, Triple Threat, Midnight Mack K. and Go Boy's Flying Cloud. I believe I heard he also had one of the great old foundation mares in his pedigree, although I can't remember which one that was. Not many horses have this many champions in their pedigree.

I never got to see this horse, but I'm happy to see old friend Dee Dee and the Gilbert Miller family win it with Masquerading. A good bunch of folks.

You are right, that's "Tater", also known as Little Jimmy Dickens. Another regular on the Grand Ole Opry. Hank Williams Sr. gave him his nickname after he recorded "Take An Old, Cold Tater and Wait." His biggest hit was "May The Bird Of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose." At 4'11" he is still living and appeared recently in one of Brad Paisley's videos. Dickens was inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 1983.
